If music be the food of love . . . by Alan Propert. When Paul first asked me to write something for this Argyle Youth Club Reunion newsletter I was full of enthusiasm. But having to commit memories to paper of events that occurred 25 years ago is not as easy as it sounds! We all have our memories of times happy and, at times, personally sad. They are a part of what has made us what we are today. However, my memories and your memories of the same event could be entirely different. In many ways that's what makes the prospect of us all meeting again after so long, so exciting. Someone will say "Do you remember when .....?" and others will have remembered bits about the same event that you and I will have forgotten. Then we'll all have a good laugh about something that had long since slipped from our memory! I suppose the thing about
the times in which we live that, most of all, makes people relate to something
is the music. It means something to each person for a particular moment
in time, and music was, of course, something that we had a lot of at Argyle. Paul, Chris Hall, Phil & Gill Ashdown and I met in the summer to do some planning for the Reunion. We ended up at Phil & Gill's for coffee and out came the music. Do you remember 'Quick Joey Small went over the wall'? .... but who sang it? Then there was the Lemon Pipers, Johnny Nash, Steppen Wolf, Four Tops, Desmond Dekker and "The Hills are Alight"!!! Oh, yes, and "Honey" - Bobby Goldsbro, "Red, red, wine" .... but who was it by? "I'm your puppet" .... the list is endless. [Sounds like the cue for a Music Trivia Quiz! - Ed] Of course, the record for me will always be "I'll pick a rose for my rose" by Marv Johnson. I think I wore it out the first night I brought it along. As you will see from the results of the Questionnaire, we intend to have our old favourites playing in the background at the Reunion. If you have a collection of old favourites from the era between 1965 - 75 please record them onto cassette and bring it along. You can be sure that our feet will soon be tapping along to what many consider to be the best era of pop music ever ...... and it was ours! Looking forward to meeting up with you all again, God bless, Brillo![]() Bring a cassette!
